From the stunning glens and breathtaking coastline to the historic attractions and family activities, there is so much to see and do in Angus. To get you started, here are 10 things not to be missed.
1 – Explore the Angus Glens
The atmospheric and unspoilt Angus Glens offer opportunities for walking, mountain biking and wildlife spotting in abundance. Visit the well known Glen Clova as well as the hidden gems of Glen Lethnot and Glen Prosen and enjoy the miles of twisting roads. You might even spot a golden eagle!
2 – Visit the birthplace of J.M. Barrie
Imagine you are Captain Hook on the hunt for Peter Pan as you explore the town of Kirriemuir, birthplace of J.M Barrie. Visit the museum which was once his childhood home, see the Peter Pan statue in the town centre and don’t miss the Neverland play park on Kirriemuir Hill. There’s even a Magic Door Trail around the town.
Did you know? Glen Prosen is home to the Captain Scott and Dr Wilson monument, erected in memorial of the Antarctic explorers who planned their ill fated expedition to the South Pole at Wilson’s home, nearby Burnside Cottage.
3 – Experience the historic Glamis Castle
Reputed to be the most haunted castle in Scotland, Glamis Castle is the setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the childhood home of the Queen Mother. Expert guides will lead you on a tour of the castle and tell you of its fascinating history. After your tour, make sure to visit the stunning castle gardens and maybe have a bite to eat in the Victorian restaurant.
4 – Take a ride on a steam train
Hop on board the Caledonian Railway and enjoy a train journey through picturesque countryside from Brechin to Bridge of Dun. The railway runs Diesel Saturdays and Steam Sundays as well as special events throughout the year including the hugely popular Thomas the Tank Engine.
Did you know? Glamis Castle is the ancestral seat to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The present Earl of Strathmore, Simon Patrick, is only the 3rd member of his family to hold all three titles – Master of Glamis, Lord Glamis and Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
5 – Play a round of golf
Experience the golf of legends in Angus with some of the finest golf courses in Scotland, if not the world. Take your pick from a variety of scenic parkland courses or challenging links courses including the famous Carnoustie Championship and historic Montrose 1562 courses.
6 – Sample an Arbroath Smokie
A trip to Angus wouldn’t be complete without trying an Arbroath Smokie, perhaps the most famous product to come from Angus. This hot smoked haddock delicacy has origins in the fishing village of Auchmithie, north of Arbroath. Have a seat by Arbroath Harbour while you eat and enjoy the stunning views.
Did you know? Arbroath Smokies are protected under European Law and have a PGI status which means they can only be called Arbroath Smokies if they are produced in a specified way and within a five mile radius of the town.
7 – Read the Declaration of Arbroath
This historic document was signed at Arbroath Abbey in 1320 and is an important piece of Scotland’s history. Visit the abbey where you can see the declaration and also soak up the atmosphere of this historic site which was founded by William the Lion.
8 – Visit an event or festival
Angus has a varied and exciting programme of events and festivals throughout the year. From live music festivals and foodie delights to highland games and walking festivals, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Did you know? Montrose Basin was hit by a tsunami in 6100BC, generated by the massive Storegga Slide in Norway. The water was 70ft high when it hit the basin, with water travelling as far inland as Forfar.
9 – View magnificent wildlife
Enjoy panoramic views at the unique Montrose Basin Visitor Centre and view a huge array of wildlife from waders and wildfowl to pink footed geese. The centre offers telescopes and binoculars for your viewing experience as well as interactive toys and games for kids and regular wildlife events.
10 – Surf the breakers…or just relax!
Lunan Bay has three miles of strawberry blonde sand and large dunes and is overlooked by the ruins of Red Castle. Popular with surfers and horse riders this is a great go to place for an active day out, or just to relax, sunbathe and maybe have a paddle in the water.
