Scotland’s Garden Scheme – Hospitalfield Gardens

3 October 2020, 11:00 am - 4 October 2020, 3:00 am

Hospitalfield Gardens

Visit the Gardens at Hospitalfield in Arbroath for this event to be among the first to experience the new garden design by Nigel Dunnett. In the 19th century, the artist Patrick Allan-Fraser (1813-1890) remodelled a 13th-century hospital to create his 19th-century home in the Arts and Crafts style.

The walled gardens have been cultivated from the early medieval period, from the medicinal garden and the orchard to the Victorian passion for collecting ferns. This beautiful space, set against the red sandstone neo-Gothic architecture, has been comprehensively developed to a design by celebrated designer Nigel Dunnett to tell the horticultural story of this extraordinary site.  The planting of the garden is very new and this is a chance to see the design at its very earliest state.

Also discover the fascinating new space that is The Fernery at Hospitalfield, complete with exotic collections of tree ferns.
