Scotland’s Gardens Scheme – Arbroath Collection of Gardens

37 Duncan Avenue (NEW) Arbroath DD11 2DA (Alison Connelly): The front garden has a small terrace with wonderful evergreen grasses planted into gravel with a group of trees, an unusual weeping malus, liquidambar and unusual beech. The rear garden is a feast of interesting planting, including acers, hostas, hellebores, ferns and many more. There are many secret gardens to discover with all their nooks and crannies.
Ashbrook Nursery and Garden Centre Forfar Road, Arbroath DD11 3RB (Anne Webster): This family-run garden centre grows the majority of its plants, including over 2,000 varieties of bedding and patio plants, alpines, herbaceous perennials, ferns and grasses. There are also comprehensive A-Z displays of trees, conifers, shrubs, alpines and perennials.
Brechin Road Allotments 85a Brechin Road, Arbroath DD11 1TA (Arbroath Allotments Association): The Brechin Road site is open this year and as always has loads of interest including plants, vegetables, fruit and creative sheds and shelters. A team of helpers will be on hand to answer any questions.
HOPE Organic Garden The Plot next to Hospitalfield House, The Westway, Arbroath DD11 2NH (The HOPE Trustees): An organic fruit and vegetable garden, which provides training and work experience for adults with learning and/or physical disabilities. Note, this garden closes at 4pm.
Inverbrothock School Sensory Garden and Forest Garden (NEW) East Kirkton Road, Arbroath DD11 4GR (Inverbrothock Pupils and Staff): These two gardens have been designed and created by the pupils, staff and parents. The Sensory Garden is a great asset to all children and staff, especially children who need additional support. There are areas of raised beds for growing vegetables, a dry river bed with interesting grasses and plants, large stone features to climb on, and different shelters and corners to play in. A polytunnel is used for outdoor classes and seed sowing. The Forest Garden includes interesting mounds and trees, an area to build dens and play amongst trees. Gardens created by and for young minds.
Springfield Rose Garden Springfield Park, Arbroath DD11 1AH (Friends of the Rose Garden): Springfield Rose Garden is a small, traditional, walled garden set in Springfield Park, close to the centre of Arbroath. The day to day upkeep and maintenance is managed by the volunteers, ‘Friends of the Rose Garden’, who work in co-operation with, and under the direction of, the local authority, to improve and regenerate the rose garden. It is a work in progress.
Directions: Tickets and maps will be available from the various gardens and Ashbrook Nursery on the day. Look for the SGS yellow arrows around town to help you locate the gardens.
Other details: Ashbrook Nursery will run tours of the nursery at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. Teas will be available at the Brechin Road Allotments.
