Angus has a number of fantastic trails for cyclists and mountain bikers of all abilities. Throw in the breathtaking views on offer here, as well as the wildlife, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect Angus adventure.

Cycling in Angus

Cyclists will have plenty to choose from here with a variety of routes covering all areas of Angus as well as varying levels of difficulty.

Beginners can enjoy a circular route from the historical town of Arbroath through the rural countryside during a 3-4 hour cycle ride which will take you past Arbroath Abbey, Colliston Castle and St Vigeans Church.

For something a bit more challenging, try the 28 mile moderate route from Carnoustie to Crombie Park, one of the stunning country parks here in Angus. Take a break while you’re there to enjoy the beauty that the park has to offer.

Avid cyclists won’t be disappointed either with difficult routes including Montrose to Edzell – 41 miles and 7 hours of amazing scenery with stunning points of interest along the way including views over Montrose Basin and Glen Esk.

Mountain Biking in Angus 

Mountain bikers will be spoilt for choice in Angus with open countryside galore just waiting to be explored.

Start off slow with one of the easy routes such as the 14km Montrose, Hillside and Northwater Bridge circular trail which includes the spectacular North Water Rail Bridge and the old Montrose railway line.

Take it up a notch with the intermediate trail up Balmashanner Hill, complete with quarry which is hugely popular with bikers. This route will take you up to the War Memorial and round the stunning Forfar Loch.

Hardcore mountain bikers shouldn’t miss the difficult Glen Esk, Tarfside and the Badalair route which includes a steep 400m climb with outstanding views of Loch Lee and Glen Mark along the way.

Don’t forget to stay safe whilst on your adventures! Check out the route in advance so you know where you’ll be going and that it is suitable for your abilities. Make sure your bike is in good working order and you have everything you might need including extra clothes, water, a map and a puncture repair kit. Also, don’t forget to respect other road users, as well as your surroundings to keep Angus beautiful for everyone.
