Highlights and Delights
Our diverse one-day itinerary has been created to help your clients to enjoy a relaxing break away in Angus among some of the most welcoming locations in Scotland.
Your clients can visit Great Britain’s first operational military airfield, an estuary that fills and empties like a basin, walk along a beautiful sandy beach and taste the world’s first climate positive gin and vodka.
From hands on experience creating award winning pies to tasting locally produced food and drink , Angus offers many unforgettable and uniquely Scottish food and drink experiences.
A DAY OUT IN MONTROSE
Montrose was the location for Great Britain’s first operational military airfield established in February 1913 and offers another worthwhile visit.
The Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre aims to show the human side of the Air Station’s past with a collection of contemporary photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. These not only tell of the history of the airfield but also the story of the men and women who served there and those who lived in the area.
The centre is entirely run by volunteers and in 2014 received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the highest awards for volunteer groups in the UK.
While in Montrose, you will also find the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre. Montrose Basin is an enclosed estuary of the river South Esk covering 750 hectares of tidal mudflats offering feeding and roosting ground to a plethora of bird species.
In autumn and winter, the Basin is home to over 100,000 migratory birds including pink-footed geese, wigeon and a variety of other waterfowl and waders, while during the spring and summer months the estuary supports various breeding colonies including sand martins, common terns and eider.
The Montrose Basin Visitor Centre offers panoramic views across the reserve. Telescopes and binoculars will be available for you to see the wildlife up close.
If your clients are looking for an outstanding lunch experience, they can head to Gordon’s Restaurant with Rooms not far from the distillery.
Transformed from a former dwelling house built in the early 1800’s, this beautiful Victorian building has been renovated with respect for the character of the old house.
The dining room with its exposed stone, beams and wood burning stove lit during chilly days is a dining room seats 28 guests.
The restaurant presents modern British seasonal cooking, influenced by classic cooking techniques and pervious top quality ingredients available from Scotland’s abundant natural larder.
After lunch visitors might want to visit Lunan Bay for a stroll. Lunan Bay is a mile-long sandy beach, with a reputation as one of the best in Angus.
It is set in a secluded, pretty, rural location, with a cave and arch at the northern end, and is divided in two by Lunan Water, backed by sand dunes. The beach regularly appears in the top ten lists of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland.
The beach is easily accessible from Lunan Bay car park via a boardwalk to a viewing platform overlooking the beach.
From here and to round of the afternoon, move on to Arbikie Distillery set on Arbikie Estate, a family-owned working farm perched on the east coast of Angus.
The estate is profoundly shaped by its environment: the red sandstone-tinted soil, the powerful sea and the turbulent weather give Arbikie a character found nowhere else. A visit to Arbikie Distillery enables your clients to immerse themselves in a true field to bottle experience.
Learn how spirits are distilled from scratch using a great range of homegrown crops including potatoes, rye, peas and many more on the farm.
Discover how the family distilled Nàdar, the world’s first climate positive gin and vodka, and how they brought back the first Scottish Rye Whisky in nearly 200 years.
With the coastline and beaches so easily accessible, your clients are able to enjoy a full coast to country experience today.
Clients return back to their accommodation after the day exploring beyond the usual tourist routes.
